Ponsanarosa Vineyard located on a portion of the Curtis Creek Ranch area on top of a knoll overlooking Curtis Creek is a creation of Suzanne Ponsano-Cruz, a longtime resident and one of many Italian families to inhabit the Mother Lode. She moved here as a young child when her father was employed to work on the Stevenot Bridge. She and her husband Dick Todd felt that the property, situated at 2550 Ft elevation with its unique micro climate, was ideal for a boutique vineyard. Wanting to deviate from the seemingly overabundance of other Italian varieties they decided to plant a classic Bordeaux blend of grapes. Based on soil studies and elevation, the grapes they chose were Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
Clones and root stalks were purchased from Duarte Nursery. Plans are to produce 100 cases of premium red wine annually. It is our long term goal to create the perfect wine blend for high end sales to exclusive restaurants. We expect to have grapes for sale in 2016.
Owing to the large transient deer population alternative crops of lavender, lemon grass and woody ornamental s were planted for their high market value: Lavender for its culinary value and soothing properties; Lemon grass as a mosquito repellent and woody ornamental s for floral arrangements.
Mentoring and apprenticeships available. We will also be offering seminars and special events.
