FOTC provided assistance to a 4H member for her steer project. She purchased an Angus cross steer to show at the Tuolumne County Fair in July. She named the steer Pickels and reported he weighed 870 pounds on February 21 with an average weight gain of 2.9 pounds/day. At present the steer is consuming about 16 pounds of feed daily which is a conversion ratio of of about 5.5 pounds of feed for one pound of weight gain. Feed consumption will gradually increase to almost 36 pounds per day. Feed consists mostly grain with some hay. She expects the steer to weigh 1235 pounds at fair time based on the current rate of gain.

Halter breaking and gentling is progressing but he needs more socialization to overcome anxiety when in unfamiliar settings.
